What is an Arco Gas Station?
The Arco gas station is one of the most iconic and recognizable brands in the United States. The company was founded in 1922 and has since expanded to become one of the largest gasoline retailers in the country. In this retrospective, we will take a look at the history of Arco and its gas stations, discuss their various products and services, and highlight some of their most famous locations.
The Arco gas station first started out as a small business on State Street in Salt Lake City. The founders were Harry A. Arco (who also founded Arco Products) and his son-in-law, Roy C. Anderson. The business grew rapidly and by 1932, they had opened their first convenience store on State Street in Ogden. By 1940, they had opened their first gasoline station outside of Utah, in Nevada.
Throughout the years, Arco has continued to expand its product line and grow its retail presence. They now operate more than 1,000 stores across America with a wide variety of services including gas, groceries, cigarettes, automotive needs, and more. Some of the most well-known Arco locations include their flagship store on State Street in Salt Lake City; the Union Station location in Los Angeles; the Airport Plaza location in Denver; the Crossroads Shopping Center location in Minneapolis; and many more.
History of the Arco Gas Station
The Arco gas station is a landmark in the history of Los Angeles. Opened in 1938, it was the first self-service gas station in the city and is now one of the oldest continuously operating stations in Los Angeles. It has been through many changes over the years, but its iconic status remains unchanged.
The Arco gas station was opened on January 1, 1938 by brothers John and Joe Arco. The brothers were veterans of World War I and saw an opportunity to open a gas station that would be convenient for motorists in downtown Los Angeles. The Arco Gas Station quickly became popular, and by 1940 it had expanded to include a grocery store.
In 1951, brothers Frank and Artie Geller acquired the Arco Gas Station and added a convenience store to their business. The Gellers ran the Arco Gas Station until 1978, when they sold it to Alfredo Serrano. Serrano continued to operate the gas station until 1991, when he sold it to Maurice Rabinowitz.
Rabinowitz owned and operated the Arco Gas Station for more than 20 years before selling it to current owner Mike Golub in 2003. The Arco Gas Station continues to operate as a convenience store today.
